Canadian candidate floats significant Go Snowmobiling donation

The powersports industry has gained the attention of Canada’s political sphere after an Ontario candidate suggested that a new Liberal Party government for the province would make an immediate $3 million strategic Go Snowmobiling investment.

The money would be used to enhance snowmobile tourism trails and help create new employment and business opportunities throughout the area, the Parry Sound North Star reported Sept. 26.

Greg Sorbara, Ontario’s Minister of Finance and up for re-election as a member of Provincial Parliament Oct. 10, raised the idea during a visit to the 40th annual convention of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC).

In front of the 600 club delegates, Sorbara also committed to working with the OFSC to develop long-term sustainable funding for tourism trails. According to the federation, the trails contribute $1.2 billion in economic impact for rural and northern Ontario each winter and more than $112 million annually in provincial tax revenues. Sorbara also promised that the Ministry of Tourism would take the lead in working with the OFSC.
