BMW motorcycle sales drop in first quarter

BMW motorcycle sales decreased 8.6 percent in the first quarter compared to the prior year period, stated a company report. BMW sold 21,046 units in the first quarter, which is down from 23,029 in the same period of 2007.

Part of the decrease can be attributed to negative segment developments in key European markets, such as Italy, France and Spain, in March in the 500cc and 750cc plus segments.

Sales, however, are expected to turn around for the second quarter. The new two-cyclinder Enduro models, F650GS and the F800GS, became available in March and are expected to contribute to significantly stronger growth in the second quarter.
