Congress passes program that could boost motorcycle sales

Congress passed the new program “cash for clunkers,” which provides government incentives of $3,500-$4,500 to people who trade in used vehicles for new, more fuel-efficient vehicles, which includes motorcycles, according to the Associated Press.

The bill came about in the restructuring of General Motors and Chrysler Group. “Cash for clunkers” will get $1 billion from July-November, which would allow about 250,000 people to participate in the program.

The House approved the bill last week, and Senate Democrats attached it to a war-funding bill aimed to ensure military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan won’t run out of money in the coming months. The overall bill now goes to the White House for the President’s signature.

If signed into law, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is allowed 30 days to create the rules to implement the cash for clunkers program as well as establish an informational Web site for consumers and dealers, stated a National Automobile Dealers Association press release.
