Yamaha unveils new technology

Yamaha Motor Co. has developed a compact transmission system that can be placed on a 100cc-125cc scooter.

The manufacturer posted an image of the system, called the Yamaha Compact Automatic Transmission, complete with a very modern-looking scooter at http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp.

Yamaha is displaying the new system at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009 and plans to have it available for its Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand Malaysia and Philippines markets.

The new transmission system fits the drive belt that connects the engine drive shaft and rear wheel axle inside the engine assembly to make possible an automatic transmission motorcycle with the same exterior appearance as a moped.

Yamaha says with this system it is possible to fit an automatic continuously variable transmission in the space occupied by the manual transmission on a conventional moped-type motorcycle, thus making it possible to combine the multipurpose utility of a moped with the ease of use of an automatic model.
