Industry Leaders: Keith Wandell

In 2011, Keith Wandell led Harley-Davidson Motor Company to double its income over 2010 and increase retail sales by nearly 6 percent. The company also added 35 dealers in international markets, including Mexico, India, Thailand, Turkey, China and Brazil. And Wandell led Harley-Davidson to make progress in its strategy to approach product development, manufacturing and the retail experience in a way that brings more profitability to the company and its dealers.

What is the biggest opportunity for the industry, and how can the industry take advantage of it?

The biggest opportunity for the industry is to introduce more people to motorcycling and add more riders to the road. When there are more riders enjoying the freedom and independence of swinging their leg over the seat of a motorcycle, we all benefit — riders, dealers and motorcycle companies.

What has been the biggest challenge in your current position and how have you dealt with it?

Keith Wandell

The biggest challenge is managing cultural change, which we’re doing through our company transformation efforts. Understanding what made our company great and knowing what to do to sustain it is both challenging and rewarding.

What’s the best advice you can give to others in the industry?

Things are never as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. Stay focused and committed to your goals and vision.
