Piaggio recalls Fly, Vespa scooters

Piaggio on Friday announced that it is recalling more than 2,000 Fly 50, Vespa LX50 and Vespa S50 scooters due improper ignition timing, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall is for certain model year 2011-12 Fly 50, 2010-12 Vespa LX50 and 2009-12 Vespa S50 scooters. The ignition control unit may fail and alter the ignition timing, increasing the risk of a fire, according to the NHTSA. Dealers will replace the ignition control unit free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before Jan. 17.
