IJSBA watercraft stopped for inspection before being shipped

A shipping container carrying PWC heading from Havasu Powersports in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., to the United Kingdom was stopped at a California border station and returned to the dealership for inspection late last week, reported Today’s News-Herald of Lake Havasu City.

Ken Little, a Havasu Powersports manager, helped package the PWC, which were used in the IJSBA World Finals, for shipment to California before they were to be loaded on a ship heading for the UK. Little had done the same in the past with no problem, however, Thursday, the UK shipment was returned, and a border station supervisor showed up to search each PWC to prevent the spread of quagga mussels.

The PWC passed the inspection, however the delay meant the units didn’t make it onto the ship they were originally set for. Now the UK racers will have to wait another two or three weeks for another ship to leave California, and they’ll be without their PWC for two months. Plus, the setback will cost about $5,000.

Tom McMahon, invasive species coordinator at Arizona Game and Fish, said he plans to work with IJSBA organizers and the Lake Havasu Marine Association to prevent the same issue in the future.
