Ski-Doo recalls about 18,000 sleds

BRP voluntarily recalled about 18,000 snowmobiles due to possible drive axle failure, which can cause riders to be thrown from the vehicle, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recall affects Ski-Doo model years 2008 and 2009. Model numbers are printed on the side panels of the units. The vehicles were sold nationwide from June 2007-September 2008 for $7,000-$12,500.

Cracks can develop in the welded joints of the drive axle assembly of the snowmobile and can result in breakage. If this happens, the track of the vehicle can unexpectedly lock, causing riders to be ejected or lose control. There have been 20 reports of locked tracks, including one report of a broken femur and reports of minor injuries.
