First Indian dealership in New Mexico set for fall opening

The iconic U.S. brand Indian Motorcycles is back and coming to its first New Mexico dealership later this year.

Business partners and cousins Michael Gaillour and Louis Herrera purchased a 9,000-square-foot building at 4509 Alameda Blvd NE, (on the corner of Alameda and Washington) where they will open Indian Motorcycle of Albuquerque this fall.

Renovations with local contractors will begin immediately, creating dozens of construction jobs for New Mexicans. When the dealership opens, it will open as many as 12 new full-time dealership positions, with plans to expand.

“The bikes are all new and all beast with a 111-cubic-inch engine. They are super, super comfortable. The bike is smooth. It’s got more power than you can ever use,” said owner Louis Herrera.

“The Indian Motorcycle Brand has returned in a genuine and exiting way in 2014. As part of the re-launch, we are honored to have the opportunity to steward this brand in Albuquerque and New Mexico,” said owner Michael Gaillour. “The advanced engineering, and iconic history will add to the long-standing tradition of riding in our Land of Enchantment.”

Indian Motorcycle would have stayed a dead brand if not for Polaris Industries Inc., the company that bought the Indian Motorcycle brand and vowed to make an enduring comeback. The new Indian Motorcycles are the result of more than $150 million in research and development, engineering and marketing.

In addition to motorcycle sales and service, the dealership will offer Indian Motorcycle parts, apparel, and accessories.

Both the architect and the principal contractor are New Mexico firms. James B. Clark of Masterworks Architects designed the build-out and the principal contractor is Damian J. Chimenti of Insight Construction.

Indian Motorcycle of Albuquerque is owned by cousins Louis Herrera and Michael Gaillour, native New Mexicans who grew up in Questa. Herrera graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and earned a Master’s degree from Purdue University. He also attended Darmouth College. He served in the U.S. Army and is currently a Lt. Colonel and battalion commander in the New Mexico National Guard. Gaillour graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in finance and has had a 30-year banking career. To learn more, please visit facebook.com/IndianMotorcycleABQ.
