Bike maker to debut new Cobra Aero engine for unmanned aircraft

News release

Rising up from the ground to incredible heights is nothing new for the team at Cobra Moto. Their competition engines have led the industry for more than two decades.

Today, the Cobra Moto team is announcing its latest venture – the culmination of a five-year plan that will, quite literally, take the company’s 20-plus year engine making heritage to stratospheric heights with the launch of Cobra Aero.

Teaming with Hood River, Oregon-based Power4Flight and Australia’s Currawong Engineering, Cobra Aero and its globally-recognized engine design & engineering expertise will work to solve powertrain reliability, durability and affordability issues in the UAS industry with the introduction of its new A33 AXS core engine – the Little engine that plays BIG.

“We’re thrilled to be entering a market where we have the potential to really make a difference in the safety and security of our world,” said Cobra Aero’s Sean Hilbert. “Coming from a military family, this personally means a lot to me.”

Founded in 2012, Cobra Aero is wrought from an engineering lineage that has won more than 300 premier national and international amateur motocross championships. Thusly, Cobra Aero’s new ‘American made’ A33 AXS core engine is born from combining deep engine designing expertise from both powersports and automotive industries with competition-tested engineering knowhow in the absolute worst possible conditions. The result is a bulletproof core engine design that is ready to take the UAS industry by storm at Atlanta’s Unmanned Systems 2015 conference hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

“The Cobra Aero team is well-versed in every aspect of small engine design, modeling and development,” said Power4Flight’s Ross Hoag. “Cobra Aero core engines and parts offer traceability, along with specified materials and tolerances – something that until now has been missing on the engine side of the UAS industry.”

With applications for military, civil and commercial UAS flight, Cobra extends its core engine expertise with one of the most complete and effective small engine supply chains here in the States. Proven performance and reliability through the past three decades in the powersports industry has Cobra Aero, teamed with Power4Flight, perfectly positioned for the rapidly expanding UAS industry. Stop by and meet the principles of Cobra Aero, and check out the new A33 AXS core engine at AUVSI booth #2249.
