Buell Motorcycle Co. is celebrating its 25th anniversary by enhancing one of its powertrains and unveiling a new platform: the 1125R.
The third Buell platform features a collaboration with manufacturer BRP. Its Austrian engine builder, Rotax, built the 1125R’s Helicon engine with detailed specifications and technology provided by Buell. The engine, which will remain exclusive to Buell, is a 72-degree DOHC liquid-cooled V-twin that produces?146?crankshaft horsepower at 9,800 rpm and 82 feet pounds of peak torque at 8,000 rpm.
The 1125R, which carries a new chassis that is the stiffest ever made by the company, is the first model on an all-new Buell platform and is one of nine models in the 2008 lineup. That lineup also includes five bikes in the Lightning streetfighter series, the XB12R Firebolt, the XB12X Ulysses and the single-cylinder Buell Blast.
Besides the new 1125R (MSRP: $11,995), Buell also said it’s enhancing the Thunderstorm V-twin powertrain, which is found on the Firebolt, Lightning and Ulysses models. Two versions of the powertrain will be offered: the Thunderstorm 1203, which at 1203cc produces 103 hp at 6,800 rpm, and the Thunderstorm 984, which at 984cc produces 92hp at 7,500 rpm.
The new powertrains feature several changes, including a new timing system, more robust crankpins, an oiling system update and a new engine control module. The enhancements are expected to improve performance and reduce required maintenance.
Another change to the Buell lineup for 2008 is enhancements to the company’s adventure sport bike, the XB12X. For 2008, it will have 47mm inverted front forks and off-set triple clamps that reduce fork flex under hard breaking. The steering sweep has been improved for low-speed, off-road maneuverability, and the bike now comes standard with heated hand grips. psb
