Ducati issues five recalls on Panigale

Ducati has announced five recalls for the 1199 Panigale within the past week. The recalls effect steering, engine cooling, rear suspension and brake components.

Two recalls stem from the steering components of the bike. One was made because the screws that secure the steering damper to the steering head could fall out because not enough Loctite was applied to the threads. For this, dealers will be removing both screws, cleaning the threads, applying the proper amount of Loctite and tightening the screws to the proper torque settings. Also in the steering assembly, the Uniball bearing on the damper rod eyelet could slip out of its seat on the Ohlins steering damper. The solution for this is for dealers to install a special washer at the steering damper’s mounting point.

The engine cooling-related recall comes as the exhaust butterfly valve bowden cable cover could melt or burn due to excess heat of the catalytic converter, possibly causing smoke or fire. Dealers will be replacing the old exhaust butterfly valve bowden cable cover with a new one.

In the rear suspension, the right and left swingarm shaft pivots could loosen, leading to a loss of control of the motorcycle. To remedy this, dealers will be tightening the right and left swingarm shaft pivots to the proper torque settings.

The fifth recall comes as the front brake master cylinder reservoir hose might interfere with the threading end of the reservoir retaining screw, causing damage to the hose. Ducati dealers will be installing a cap nut and a washer at the end of the reservoir retaining screw for this.

The recalls affect 2,411 units manufactured from March 16 to July 12, 2012. Ducati has not provided a recall notification schedule.
