Indonesia’s Association of Motorcycle Producers (AISI) reports the country’s motorcycle sales for the first nine months of 2004 totaled 2.89 million units, up 38.86% over the same period last year.
September sales rose to 374,694 units, up 4.5% from 356,327 units in the previous month. Year-to-date sales in September, not including sales by non-AISI members, increased 26.4%, according to the association.
AISI predicts that sales by its members will reach 3.7 million units this year. Non-AISI members are primarily agents and/or assemblers of Chinese motorcycles and total motorcycle sales within the country this year are expected to top 4 million units.
Indonesia’s motorcycle market leader is PT Astra International, which sold 191,316 motorcycles in September, up 0.8% from the previous month. Astra deals in Honda brand two-wheelers. In the first nine months of this year, Astra sold 1.54 million motorcycles, equivalent to a 53% market share.
Sales of Suzuki motorcycles were 86,978 units in September compared to 59,259 units in September 2003.
